General Purpose:
The Director of Engineering will provide strategic and operational leadership to our multi-disciplinary team, encompassing Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, and Controls engineering and design. This role is responsible for the business, practice, and culture of Engineering across the company focused on leading and overseeing the successful execution of engineering for projects in various heavy industrial sectors. Engineering projects are primarily for self-performed design-build project delivery but also include engineering studies and external IFC packages.
This is a senior leadership role that requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a results-oriented approach interfacing directly with our deep client list with decades of performance reputation. The Engineering & Design department is a key growth focus of the McCarl’s companies and this role is expected to bring organizational leadership capabilities along with technical expertise.
Direct reports include: Engineering Manager and Design Manager.
Peers include: Directors of: PreConstruction, Commercial, Field Services, EPC, Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead Engineering and Design department capability and capacity growth and mentor department leadership team.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for engineering leadership through the entire project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and FEED to site engineering support during construction, commissioning, and handover.
- Own strategic client relationships and represent comprehensive services across McCarl’s (e.g. fabrication, maintenance, EPC, etc...).
- Build client relationships, review RFPs, formulate winning proposal strategies, lead engineering efforts to contribute to company pursuit teams.
- Review opportunities with company leadership teams, maintain a successive pipeline of design projects.
- Own Engineering & Design forecasting and budgeting processes.
- Own engineering project kick-offs and represent Engineering & Design in EPC and Construction project kick-offs and reviews.
- Support monthly project reviews and intermittent site visits with Project Management to find opportunities to increase engineered solutions for construction.
- Foster a growth focus in Process Safety and Safety-in-Design principles.
- Guide lessons-learned and best practices across the organization for Engineering & Design.
- Recruit, train, mentor and retain high-performance project team talent.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and commitment to excellence.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for innovation and capability growth.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant Engineering field, Civil/Structural or Electrical is preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in heavy industrial engineering projects, leadership, and management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Proven track record of successfully delivering detailed design and IFC engineering packages for $20M-$250M TIC projects in heavy industrial sectors. Brownfield experience is a plus.
- Strong understanding of engineering and construction principles, codes and standards in the USA.
- Extensive knowledge of current commercial models used in engineering and construction.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
- Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships (both internal and external).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Excellent written and presentation skills and language.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
